Many of us use coffee makers every day. The coffee craze combined with the desire for convenient affordable coffee has sprouted a vast new line of coffee making devices, including single-cup brewers for those of us who don't need a whole pot to ourselves.
Now, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning of the dangers posed by Tassimo single-cup coffee makers. The company is recalling close to 2 million defective products in the United States and Canada. The coffee makers are causing second-degree burns. One burn was so bad to a 10-year-old girl's face and neck that she had to be taken to the hospital.
The product recall includes 4 million single serve disks that the coffee maker needs to brew a cup. According to a report by the Associated Press, 140 incidents have been reported using the coffee makers, 37 of which have caused second-degree burns to victims. The coffee makers are said to have doused people with hot liquid, tea leaves and coffee grounds. The longer something hot makes contact with the skin, the more severe the burn will be. People who were sprayed with grounds or leaves may have suffered more severe burns.
Companies need to be held accountable for the products they make. Consumers don't have the ability to research and test every product they buy for engineering quality. Therefore, companies that manufacture defective products need to take responsibility for injuries resulting from their products. If you are injured as a result of a defective product it may be wise to consult with a personal injury attorney.
